At your complementary screening, a speech pathologist will take a  sample and profile your speech patterns then make a program recommendation. A typical accent reduction course begins with 12 sessions for a moderate or heavy accent. Shorter classes are available for milder accents.  At the end of your program, significant progress is measured and you will have noticeable improvement with your speech and communication skills. Advance conversational courses and short term accent reduction programs are available if more support is needed. Your accent reduction program is custom tailored to meet your individual needs so you only spend time working on areas that specifically apply to you.

Your accent reduction course will begin by learning to have awareness on how you pronounce your target sounds as it compares to the American Communication Skills Model. Instruction begins at the word level, then and as soon as you are experiencing success, immediately advances to sentence and conversational speech. The goal is to progress you from structured drill to communicating out in the real world quickly. How you use melody and speech rhythm as well as speed will be addressed in your speech therapy program. Specific techniques are blended into your program to assist you with transferring your new speech skills out in the community.  Former clients frequently comment that they wished they perused accent reduction sooner.

Why Accent Reduction Will Work for You at Speech and Voice Enterprises

Speech and Voice Enterprises understands the complexities of accented habits and how they influence your American speech and communication skills.

• Many accented speakers will substitute sounds. For example, substituting the /t/ or /d/ sound for /th/ as in “tunder” or “dis”.  Learning how to pronounce new speech sounds is covered early in your accent reduction program so you can experience success with improved communication skills right away.
  

• /R/ and /L/ can be challenging sounds for accented speakers. You will learn a step by step plan for correct pronunciation that will make these challenging sounds easier to produce.

• Many accented speakers accidentally turn their voice “off” for ending speech sounds. For example, instead of saying “shoes” with a voiced /z/ ending sound for correct pronunciation, the speaker will say, “shoes” with the voiceless (turned off voice) /s/ sound. Turning “off” voiced ending sounds is a common accented habit that impairs the quality of your communication skills. Speech and Voice Enterprises will get you into the habit of saying all of your ending sounds at the conversational level.

• American speech uses little tension in the neck and facial muscles.  You will learn how to minimize facial tension to avoid speech that sounds too choppy or punched.

• All cultures use melody for speech differently, which can be a major factor for having accented American speech. Many speakers will use the melody from their first language causing their American speech to sound foreign. Even when correct American grammar and sounds are used, if the “American” melody is not, then the American speech will sound accented.  Speech and Voice Enterprises will teach you a strategy to speak with the American and professional style for career speech.
